Objectives:
In addition to the above, students completing this subject should:
- have a knowledge of theories of colonialism and postcolonialism and their growth in the West.
- have an understanding of the production of European visual culture in Australia from the voyages of Cook to Federation
- have developed skills in writing about visual culture in Australia through diverse theoretical frameworks
Content:
An examination of visual culture in colonial Australia. The subject considers theories of colonialism and postcolonialism in relationship to the representation of race, class and gender.
Assessment:
Written work which may comprise class papers, essays, visual tests or take-home examinations totalling about 5,000 words.
