Objectives:
In addition to the above, students completing this subject should:
- display knowledge of the principal movements in modern design and art from the turn of the century to the present day;
- interpret the design of objects used in everyday life in terms of cultural practices and gendered, classed, and ethnic identities
- understand relationships between different cultural artefacts affected by the design process, from architecture and painting to film-sets and fashion;
- grasp key ideas on the impact of mass production, consumer culture, and new technologies on design.
Content:
The subject considers design movements from Art Nouveau, Art Deco and the Bauhaus to Pop, Punk and Postmodernism. It ranges across architecture, furniture, set design, fashion, appliances, and automobiles. It considers consumerism, design theory and the aesthetics of design.
Assessment:
Exercises and/or essays and/or visual test totalling not more than 4,000 words.
