106-445 Literature and Context

Year 4 English.

Credit points: 16.7 4th year

Timetable: First semester

Objectives:

Students who complete this subject successfully will:

• be familiar with a range of writing in English from the seventeenth to the early twentieth century;
• understand some of the pressures and some of the problems involved in notions of canon, period, literary 'movement', historical context;
• be able to utilize both analytical and writing skills.

Content:

This subject is a study of poetry, prose and drama within the specified time-range, focusing on ways in which it has been taken to be 'representative' or 'subversive'.

Assessment:

Written work of not more than 6,000 words.
