This subject explores originality and diversity in poetry of several centuries and different countries, with some attention to context and reception.

Assessment:

Written work of not more than 6,000 words.

106-422 English Historical Linguistics

Availability: Not offered in 1996.

Credit points: 16.7 4th year

Coordinator: Bernard Muir.

Prerequisite: Completion of a major in English Language with grades averaging at least H2A. Subjects offered under this rubric may, in some years, have specific prerequisites from among the English Language electives, e. g Introductory Old English Language and Literature (106-224/324).

Contact: Three hours of lectures/seminars per week.

Timetable: Second semester

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should have gained an advanced understanding of the different historical stages of the English language, and the forces of change that have shaped it from Old English to the present day.

Content:

A course of advanced lectures dealing with the history of the English Language whose topic may vary from year to year, given by members of the department or visiting scholars.

Assessment:

Not more than 6,000 words in written work.
