Objectives:
Students who complete this subject successfully will be:
- familiar with the history and context of women's writing in Australia up to Federation;
- aware of the ways literary histories have presented Australian writing and Australian women, and of more recent critical and cultural efforts to reconsider Australian women's writing;
- familiar with feminist literary theory both in Australia and elsewhere and able to demonstrate their understanding of this theory through informed analysis of any text;
- able to demonstrate an understanding of nineteenth-century literary conventions and the way they are manifested in Australian writing, showing a knowledge of the relations between gender, geography and writing.
Content:
This subject studies Australian writing, before Federation, by and about women, focusing on issues of gender, genre, nationality and history.
Assessment:
Written work of not more than 6,000 words.
