104-443 Honours Seminar in Classics and Archaeology 1

Year 4 Classical Studies.

Credit points: 16.7 4th year

Coordinator: Associate Professor P J Connor.

Prerequisite: Entry into Honours or equivalent programme.

Contact: Two hours a week.

Timetable: First semester

Objectives:

Students on completion of the subject should have acquired an increased ability to utilise both literary sources and archaeological material for the study of ancient cultures.

Content:

This subject will focus upon historical problems that necessitate both textual evidence and material evidence for study and interpretation. Semester 1 will concentrate on problems in the earlier Near Eastern and Greek world, and may include topics such as writing, colonisation, Homer and the Iron Age, tyranny.

Assessment:

Written work, tests and examinations totalling no more than 6,000 words.
