104-335 Theory, Methods and Techniques of Archaeology

Note: This subject is a prerequisite for Honours in Archaeology.

Credit points: 16.7 3rd year

Coordinator: Associate Professor A Sagona.

Prerequisite: Two second-year Archaeology subjects. Corequisites: Two other Archaeology subjects and permission of the Head of Department.

Contact: A lecture and two tutorials a week, or equivalent.

Timetable: Second semester

Objectives:

Students on completion of the subject should have acquired a range of practical skills necessary for the primary analysis of excavated data ranging from the initial sorting of finds to final publication of material as well as having acquired the ability to make judgements based on available information; they should be able to structure and present archaeological material in a professional way and have developed an appreciation of current theoretical means of interpreting past material remains.

Content:

Lectures and practical classes on theoretical approaches, methodological principles, and specific techniques of archaeology.

Assessment:

5,000 words of written work.
