104-248/348 Mesopotamian Mythology, Religion and Literature

Credit points: 16.7 2nd and 3rd years

Coordinator: Dr G Bunnens.

Prerequisite: Any two Arts subjects or permission of the Head of the Department. This subject does not presuppose knowledge of, or expertise in, the Semitic languages.

Contact: Two lectures and a tutorial a week.

Timetable: First semester

Objectives:

Students on completion of the subject should have acquired an initial understanding of the ancient Mesopotamian conception of the universe and humanity's place in it, and have acquired a broad knowledge of the main aspects of intellectual life in ancient Mesopotamia.

Content:

The history, literature and thought of the Ancient Near East, principally the Mesopotamian tradition; Sumerian mythology, Babylonian mythology, scientific works and profane literature.

Assessment:

3,000 words of written work (50 per cent) and a 2-hour examination (50 per cent).
