104-246/346 Prehistoric Archaeology

Availability: Not offered in 1996; expected to be offered in 1997.

Credit points: 16.7 2nd and 3rd years

Coordinator: Associate Professor A Sagona.

Prerequisite: Any two Arts subjects or permission of the Head of the Department.

Contact: Two lectures and a tutorial a week.

Objectives:

Students on completion of the subject should have acquired a knowledge of the prehistoric cultures of the Old World and Australia; have developed a knowledge of archaeological methods to study processes of cultural change and interaction.

Content:

The archaeology of prehistoric cultures from the emergence of hunter-gatherer societies to the earliest sedentary communities. Chronologically the subject covers the period from about 4 million years ago to 4000 B. C.

Assessment:

3,000 words of written work (50 per cent) and a 2-hour examination or equivalent (50 per cent).
