Prerequisite: Any two Arts subjects or permission of the Head of the Department.
Contact: Two lectures and a tutorial a week.
Objectives:
Students on completion of the subject should be able to: discuss intelligently the results of archaeological work in Hellenistic Palestine, from historical and methodological points of view; Reflect on the 'clash of cultures' motiv especially as it applies to Hellenism and Judaism; Articulate the importance of Hellenisation for the processes which produced Rabbinic Judaism and early Christianity.
Content:
The subject deals with archaeological method and specific outcomes of archaeological practice within the context of the history of Palestine within the range of years 300 BCE to 135 CE.
Assessment:
Essay: one 3000 word essay (30 per cent), Tutorial: one 1000 word paper [assessed together with the tutorial presentation] (20 per cent), Examination: one one-hour test during the semester (50 per cent).
