104-239/339 Syria and Palestine in the Bronze and Iron Ages

Availability: Not offered in 1996; expected to be offered in 1997.

Credit points: 16.7 2nd and 3rd years

Coordinator: Dr G Bunnens.

Prerequisite: Any two Arts subjects or permission of the Head of the Department.

Contact: Two lectures and a tutorial a week.

Objectives:

Students should on completion of the subject have acquired a general understanding of the main aspects of the material culture of ancient Syria and Palestine, especially their relationship to Mesopotamia and Egypt; have an initial understanding of how the study of material culture can contribute to our knowledge of ancient Syrian and Palestinian societies as a whole; have a background of relevant knowledge and skills on which to base further study of ancient Syrian and Palestinian archaeology.

Content:

History of the development of Syrian and Palestinian culture from the late Chalcolithic down to the Assyrian conquest. The subject makes extensive use of architectural evidence and figurative art.

Assessment:

3,000 words of written work (50 per cent) and a 2-hour examination (50 per cent).
