104-231/331 Byzantium in the Sixth Century

Availability: Not offered in 1996; expected to be offered in 1997.

Credit points: 16.7 2nd and 3rd years

Coordinator: Associate Professor R D Scott.

Prerequisite: Any two Arts subjects or permission of the Head of the Department.

Contact: A 2-hour seminar a week, or equivalent.

Objectives:

Students on completion of the subject should have acquired an understanding of Byzantine history, literature and society through the study of the evidence for the period and have also acquired the necessary skills for the interpretation of this evidence.

Content:

Byzantine history, literature and society in the 6th century; the role of the classics in Byzantine society.

Assessment:

3,000 words of written work (50 per cent) and a 2-hour examination (50 per cent).
