104-230/330 Pagans and Christians in the Roman World

Availability: Not offered in 1996; expected to be offered in 1997.

Credit points: 16.7 2nd and 3rd years

Prerequisite: Any two Arts subjects or permission of the Head of the Department.

Contact: Two lectures and a tutorial a week, or equivalent.

Objectives:

Students on completion of the subject should have acquired an understanding of the main aspects of pagan and Christian culture in the Roman world, the evidence for these periods and the necessary skills for the interpretation of this evidence.

Content:

The cultural and religious life of the late empire; the conflict between Christianity and pagan culture.

Assessment:

3,000 words of written work (50 per cent) and a 2-hour examination (50 per cent).
