Credit points: 16.7 2nd and 3rd years

Coordinator: Associate Professor R D Scott.

Prerequisite: Any two Arts subjects or permission of the Head of the Department.

Contact: Two lectures and a tutorial a week, or equivalent.

Timetable: First semester

Objectives:

Students on completion of the subject should have acquired an understanding of Imperial Roman literature and society through the study of the evidence for the period and have also acquired the necessary skills for the interpretation of this evidence.

Content:

The history, social and literary life of Rome in the first four centuries AD.

Assessment:

3,000 words of written work (50 per cent) and a 2-hour examination (50 per cent).
