104-224/324 Greek Philosophy: in Search of the Good Life

Availability: Not offered in 1996; expected to be offered in 1997.

Credit points: 16.7 2nd and 3rd years

Coordinator: To be advised.

Prerequisite: Any two Arts subjects or permission of the Head of the Department.

Contact: Two lectures and a tutorial a week, or equivalent.

Objectives:

Students on completion of the subject should be introduced to the scope, achievement and principal concerns of Ancient Philosophy, and have acquired critical and analytical skills in the reading of selected Greek philosophical texts.

Content:

Selected works of Plato, Aristotle and other Greek philosophers on the nature of the good life.

Assessment:

3,000 words of written work (50 per cent) and a 2-hour examination (50 per cent).

Note: This single-semester subject is offered by Classics and Archaeology.

Availability: Not offered in 1996.

Credit points: 16.7 2nd and 3rd years

Prerequisite: One first-year single-semester Philosophy subject. Students who lack this prerequisite, but believe themselves adequately prepared to attempt any second/third year subjects, should consult the Head of Department.

Contact: Up to three hours a week.
