104-146 Classical Greek and Roman Literature and Society

Year 1 Classical Studies.

Credit points: 12.5 1st year

Coordinator: Associate Professor R D Scott and Associate Professor P J Connor.

Prerequisite: None.

Contact: Two lectures and a tutorial a week.

Timetable: First semester

Objectives:

Students on completion of this subject should be able to: recognise the distinctive features of the main genres of classical literature; to understand how to approach classical literature and to understand its achievements. Students should also have acquired a knowledge of the distinctive features of the environments in which such works were written.

Content:

A study of famous works from selected genres of Classical Greek and Roman literature which have helped shape European literature, namely Epic, Tragedy, Lyric Poetry, and History, together with a study of the societies which produced such literature with emphasis on Greek (Athenian) Democracy and Roman Imperialism.

Assessment:

Written work of 2,000 words (50 per cent) and a 2-hour examination (50 per cent)
