104-136 Empires of the Ancient World

Year 1 Classical Studies.

Credit points: 12.5 1st year

Coordinator: Dr R G Jenkins.

Prerequisite: None, though any classics or archaeology 1st year subject is recommended.

Contact: Two lectures and a tutorial a week.

Timetable: Second semester

Objectives:

Students on completion of this subject should be able to: recognise an empire when they see one, and apply a standard set of criteria to the analysis of that empire; criticise these criteria from the perspective of their overall adequacy and their particular relevance to any exercise; recognise parallels with contemporary situations, and be able to reflect on the relevance for these of an understanding of ancient world contexts.

Content:

A basic set of criteria for analysis will be applied to four empires selected from a long list.

These criteria will be assessed before and after the exercise for their applicability. In particular the dynamic interactions between the various criteria will be considered.

Assessment:

Essay: one 2000 word essay (30 per cent), Tutorial: one 1000 word paper [assessed together with the tutorial presentation] (20 per cent) and Examination: one 1-hour paper during the semester (50 per cent).
