Objectives:
On the completion of this subject students should be able to demonstrate that they:
- have an appreciation of various philosophical, ideological, and theoretical positions as expressed in contemporary and recent architecture;
- have developed techniques for evaluating these positions.
Content:
An exploration of the relation of architectural form and practice to its social, political, economic, philosophical, cultural and interdisciplinary context. An introduction to a broad range of theory relevant to architecture and urban design, including: Architectural Typology, Semiotics, Phenomenology, Deconstruction, Regionalism, Postmodern theory, Behavioural theory, Urban theory, Aesthetics, Feminist theory, Critical Social theory.
Assessment:
Assignments (eg: exercises, essays, and class presentations) equivalent to not more than 5,000 words, and one examination of up to 2 hours (which could take the form of a class test) Details, including the weighting of assessment, will be made available within the first 2 weeks of the semester.
