Note: BPD (Arch) students may substitute this subject with an alternative technology subject (eg: with an approved subject from the Faculty of Engineering).
Credit points: 12.5
Coordinator: Clare Newton.
Prerequisite: Building Technology 1A and 1B
Contact: Up to 5 hours of lectures, tutorials, studio and laboratory work, and site visits per week
Timetable: Second semester
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to demonstrate that they:
- have an appreciation of the structural action of statically determinate and indeterminate structural systems including the evaluation of forces and deflections;
- can choose a structural system by understanding the modes of structural action (and the behaviour of materials) for a range of building types;
- are able to do the conceptual structural design of simple statically determinate beams, columns, slabs, and frames in steel, including simple connections;
- have a practical appreciation of soils and their influence on building footings and foundations.
Content:
Structures: Design of elements and of determinate structures and an introduction to indeterminate structural analysis; deflections; structural design and the role of the consultant engineer; the application of structural design codes including loading codes. Soil Mechanics: The characteristics and physical properties of rocks and soils and their influence on the design of building footings and building behaviour.
Assessment:
Assignments (eg: exercises, essays, class presentation) equivalent to not more than 5,000 words and one examination up to 2 hours (which could take the form of a class test). (Details, including the weighting of assessment, will be made available in the first 2 weeks of the semester. ) Exercises may relate to work being undertaken in other subjects.
