Credit points: 12.5
Coordinator: Alex Selenitsch.
Corequisite: 702-204 Architectural Design and Practice 2A
Contact: Up to 5 hours of lectures, seminars, and tutorials per week; and additional studio work.
Timetable: Second semester
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to demonstrate that they:
- are skilled in the tectonic expression of frame and infill in architecture;
- are able to functionally and compositionally combine in a single design of some programatic complexity the tectonic expressions of mass and of frame and infill along with the expressive internal volumetric manipulation of architectural space;
- have further developed their skills for analysing increasingly complex programs and the cultural meanings and human values expressed within them, and for being able to functionally arrange the constituent parts of a program in plan and section to achieve architectural form that is tectonically expressive, and constructionally, structurally, environmentally sound and responsive to its site;
- have an introductory understanding of techniques for analysing built context, and using this analysis to inform the design process;
- have developed analytical and synthesising skills (including appropriate documentation, graphic, and model-making skills), along with the ability conceptualise in three-dimensions, sufficient to undertake Architectural Design and Practice 3.
Content:
Students will undertake a series of studio-based exercises in design for analysing increasingly complex programs and their development into expressive architectural form.
Assessment:
Assessment will be based on two major projects and a review of a portfolio of all assignments set during the semester. (Projects, studio tests, exercises, and tutorial presentations to the equivalent of 7,500 words. Details will be made available within the first 2 weeks of the semester. )
