Objectives:
On completion of this subject, students should: understand the factors associated with the propagation of plants for plantation programs; understand the process of species and site selection for a plantation program; understand the factors which limit productivity and how they can be ameliorated through site preparation, fertiliser addition, control of inter and intra specific competition; understand the processes of tree improvement through tree breeding programs; appreciate the changing political and environmental base of plantation programs both locally and overseas; communicate ideas and research results in a cogent written fashion.
Content:
Seed. Vegetative propagation. Nurseries. Plantation Silviculture: species, site selection, site preparation, transplanting, cultivation, weed control, fertilizing, thinning and pruning. Eucalypt plantations. An introduction to tree breeding.
Assessment:
A 3-hour written examination at the end of the subject; assignments and reports on practical work may be required.
