<OBJECTIVES>On completion of the subject students should be able to understand:
<ul>
<li>the interdependent relationships between the functions and activities of human resource management;
<li>the different strategies of human resource management;
<li>how the management of human resources can be integrated into business strategies.
</ul>
</OBJECTIVES>
<CONTENT>The course will examine the theoretical and practical application of the five basic functions of Human Resource Management: planning and forecasting human resource requirements; recruitment and selection; appraisal, evaluation and employee motivation; designing and implementing employee training and development programmes; improving quality of life and productivity programmes, and improving the physical work environment; and managing effective working relationships. The relationships between these functions and strategic human resource management are addressed, as well as how these can be incorporated into business strategies.
<ASSESSMENT>One 3-hour end-of-semester examination (60%); written assignments and seminar presentations together not exceeding 3,000 words (40%).
