<OBJECTIVES>On completion of this subject students should be able to:
<ul>
<li>define the tasks and roles of the manager in achieving the objectives of an organisation
<li>identify the key factors in the external and internal environment that affect the management of an organisation
<li>describe the systems and structures which are constructed to achive the objectives of the organisation
<li>identify the major factors which affect employee behaviour
<li>critically assess the means by which organisations manage employee relations;
<li>analyse the issues involved in a selection of important theoretical and practical debates in the management literature
</ul>
</OBJECTIVES>
<CONTENT>This is an introductory course in which the student will examine the principles which underlie the practices which assist the management of strategy, systems, structure and people in the modern workplace. The course will be evaluative rather than prescriptive in nature as well as having a strong international comparative leaning. Topics covered will include ethics, strategy, planning, control, power, organisational culture, leadership, conflict, dispute resolution, motivation, communication, workplace change, discrimination, flexibility and globalisation.
<ASSESSMENT>One 2-hour end-of-semester examination (70%) and an essay of up to 2,000 words (30%).
