Associate Professor N Norman. 316-313 Microeconomics or equivalent. Second semester Three hours a week of seminars. On completion of this subject students should be able to:

• understand the main theories used in important areas of policy-oriented microeconomic analysis;
• critically evaluate contemporary policy debates in the area of microeconomic policy with reference to advanced economic theory;
• extend their knowledge of microeconomic policy via independent study and by taking advanced subjects in this area.

The application of advanced micro-economics in Australian policy analysis and debates, including (inter alia) industry regulation, deregulation and privatisation, the economic analysis of legal disputes and their resolution, the economics of technological change, economics of the environment and some microeconomic issues which arise in trade policy. A small number of the seminars will be given by specially invited speakers. A 3-hour examination (80 per cent) and class assignments totalling approximately 2,000 words (20 per cent).
