<PREREQUISITES>The third year subject 316-313 Microeconomics must be passed before this subject is taken.

<OBJECTIVES>On completion of this subject students should:
<ul>
<li>be able to read and understand primary sources in this area;
<li>understand the major developments in neoclassical economics in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

</OBJECTIVES>
<CONTENT>The purpose of this subject is to examine the development of neoclassical economic theory from approximately the middle of the last century. Emphasis will be on neoclassical microeconomic theory, including the work of Jevons, Walras, Wicksell, Marshall, Edgeworth and other major neoclassical economics. The course will be concerned with looking at modern microeconomic theory from an historical perspective. Students will be expected to read original works as well as secondary literature.
<ASSESSMENT>One 3-hour examination (80 per cent) plus one essay of approximately 2,500 words (20 per cent).
