<OBJECTIVES>On completion of this subject students should be able to:
<ul>
<li>extend their knowledge of special topics in economics via the independent study of books and articles dealing with theory and policy in this area and by taking advanced subjects dealing with these matters;
<li>judge the usefulness and the limitations of existing theory in specific areas of economics;
<li>critically evaluate contemporary policy debates in the areas of international trade and the balance of payments with reference to economic principles as applied to special topics in economics.

</OBJECTIVES>
<CONTENT>Special topics may be offered from time to time which reflect the interests of permanent and/or visiting members of staff.
<ASSESSMENT>A 2-hour examination (80 per cent) and an assignment of approximately 2,500 words (20 per cent).
