Second semester Three hours a week of seminars for one semester On completion of this subject students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of advanced topics in institutional change, through:

• detailed analysis and commentary on the origins, evolution and characteristics of capitalism and its impact on society;
• description of labour market institutions and their critical elements, together with the imapct of these on work, workers and the labour market;
• analysis and commentary on historiography and methodology as applied to current issues in the evolution of economic institutions.

Topics include the origins, evolution and attributes of the economic institutions of capitalism, including the modern business corporation, and the state; labour market institutions; work, workers, and internal labour markets; business strategies and development; institutional change and path dependency, transformation of non-market economies. Written work not exceeding 3,000 words (30%); one -hour exam (70%).
