<OBJECTIVES>On completion of this subject students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of advanced topics in institutional change, through:
<ul>
<li>detailed analysis and commentary on the origins, evolution and characteristics of capitalism and its impact on society;
<li>description of labour market institutions and their critical elements, together with the imapct of these on work, workers and the labour market;
<li>analysis and commentary on historiography and methodology as applied to current issues in the evolution of economic institutions.
</ul>
</OBJECTIVES>
<CONTENT>Topics include the origins, evolution and attributes of the economic institutions of capitalism, including the modern business corporation, and the state; labour market institutions; work, workers, and internal labour markets; business strategies and development; institutional change and path dependency, transformation of non-market economies.
<ASSESSMENT>Written work not exceeding 3,000 words (30%); one -hour exam (70%).
