<OBJECTIVES>On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
<ul>
<li>analyse and describe changing approaches to the writing of economic history;
<li>investigate and provide a critique on recent methodological trends in economic history;
<li>assess and describe the usefulness and limitations of history and economics;
<li>evaluate and describe the use of statistics and econometrics in economic history;
<li>identify and provide a commentary on the newest research topics in economic history.

</OBJECTIVES>
<CONTENT>This subject focusses on the growth of economic history as a separate discipline. Topics include: the English and American approaches to economic history; the cliometric revolution; the evolution of Australian economic history; history and economic history; economics and economic history; major debates in economic history including slavery, the standard of living, research on women in history.
<ASSESSMENT>Written work not exceeding 3,000 words (40 per cent); one 2-hour examination (70 per cent).
