<SEMESTER>Second semester
<CONTACT>Three hours a week: a language class, a lecture and a seminar.
<OBJECTIVES>On completion of this subjects students will
<ul>
<li>have consolidated and extended knowledge of the Old Norse language;
<li>have developed reading skills in Old Norse so that they can read Old Norse texts with the aid of a dictionary;
<li>be able to read a short saga in Old Norse (Hakonar saga g&oacute; da);
<li>be able to survey Old Norse literature, with a concentration on five sagas in English translation;
<li>be introduced to the mythology of Ancient Scandinavia.
</ul>
<CONTENT>An introduction to the Old Norse language and a survey of the history and culture of the Viking Era (c. 800-1050 AD).
<ASSESSMENT>Weekly assignments in the language; a 1-hour test in September and a 3-hour examination at the end of semester.
