<OBJECTIVES>Students should at the end of the subject be able to:
<ul>
<li>Understand the development of the two genres in Russian literature;
<li>Demonstrate a close understanding of one or two selected playwrights and poets.
</ul>
<CONTENT>Major themes, playwrights and poets of the 19th and 20th centuries. Special attention will be given to one major work by each of Gogol, Chekhov, Mayakovsky and Petrushevskaya.
<ASSESSMENT>By essay and class paper totalling up to 5,000 words (3rd year), 6,000 words (4th year).
