<TITLE>FRENCH FEMINISMS</TITLE>

<PREREQUISITES>One first-year single-semester Philosophy subject. Students who lack this prerequisite, but believe themselves adequately prepared to attempt any second/third year subjects, should consult the Head of Department.
<SEMESTER>Second semester

<OBJECTIVES>Students completing this subject should:
<ul>
<li>gain an understanding of the philosophical issues arising from ways of conceptualizing women's social situation and the construction of women's psychosexual being;
<li>be able to apply the techniques of philosophical analysis to discussion of the theories of key French thinkers.
</ul>
<CONTENT>Critical discussion of a number of theorisations about women by French feminists. Theories explored include materialist, psychoanalytic and radical lesbian approaches, as well as critiques of the institution of philosophy itself. Texts are drawn from Beauvoir, Delphy, Irigaray, Kristeva, Cixous, Wittig, and Le Doeuff.
<ASSESSMENT>One class paper (10 per cent) and two end-of-semester assignments of no more than 2,000 words each (45 per cent each).
