16.7 2nd and 3rd years Dr Bruce Langtry. One first-year single-semester Philosophy subject. Students who lack this prerequisite, but believe themselves adequately prepared to attempt any second/third year subjects, should consult the Head of Department. First semester Up to three hours a week. On completion of the subject students should be able to:

• show an understanding of the issues raised in the subject;
• display acquaintance with some important past contributions to the discussion of those issues;
• indicate an awareness of how the subject matter of the subject is related to broader concerns in contemporary philosophy;
• manifest philosophical skill in arguing in an alert and well informed way for conclusion related to issues raised in the subject.

Major themes in the foundations of religion, such as classical arguments for and against the existence of God, the problem of evil and epistemological issues concerning miracles. One 2-hour end-of-semester examination (50 per cent) and an assignment of no more than 3,000 words (50 per cent).
