<OBJECTIVES>By the end of the subject, students should:

<li>be familiar with a number of the major problems of analysis and description in current semantic theory;
<li>demonstrate an understanding of the competing approaches which have been taken to these problems in linguistics and related disciplines such as philosophy;
<li>have developed skills in formal semantic analysis.
</ul>
<CONTENT>Introduction to formal semantics, and consideration of a range of current topics in semantic theory.
<ASSESSMENT>Regular practical exercises and two written-up class presentations, totalling no more than 5,000 words.
