<CONTACT>Lectures/seminars totalling not more than three hours a week.
<OBJECTIVES>Through the work undertaken in either of these subjects, students should:
<ul>
<li>further develop their understanding of human language and the problems and issues of significance in current linguistic theory and practice;
<li>have undertaken an intensive study in some area of linguistics.
</ul>
<SEMESTER>First semester
<CONTENT>Problems and issues of significance in current linguistic theory and practice. It is intended that this subject will enable students to take advantage of advanced level subjects. Students should contact the Department before enrolling in this subject. Topics in 1996 include Grammar Formalisms Pragmatics <i>(First semester)</i>, Polysemy <i>(Second semester) </i>and Functionalism and Verb Serialization <i>(Year).</i>
<ASSESSMENT>Written work totalling 5,000 words.
