<PREREQUISITES>50 points completed in Computer Science subjects, or by permission of the subject convenor. This unit cannot be taken by those who have completed Introduction to the Study of Language I and/or Introduction to the Study of Language II.

<OBJECTIVES>Students who complete this subject should be able to:-
<ul>
<li>demonstrate a general understanding of the nature of human language and the major issues in linguistics;
<li>show they have begun to develop skills for describing and analyzing languages;
<li>show they have gained a conceptual framework for thinking about and discussing language;
<li>demonstrate an awareness of the place of linguistics in cognitive science and computational applications.
</ul>
<CONTENT>An introduction to linguistic analysis and representation with a focus on issues and problems in the computational modelling of natural language (understanding, generation and translation).
<ASSESSMENT>Assignments and an end of semester take home exam, totalling 5,000 words.
