<PREREQUISITES>Students may take this unit without having done first year linguistics (in order to make the subject available to Women's Studies students). A series of special 'catch-up' tutorials for such students is held at the beginning of the semester.

<OBJECTIVES>Students who complete this subject should be able to:
<ul>
<li>identify and describe gender differences in language behaviour;
<li>demonstrate an understanding of the relationships between 'sexism in language', language and social divisions, and linguistic change.
</ul>
<CONTENT>A study of the differences between men's and womens' speech, the role of language in establishing and regulating gender divisions, and models for linguistic intervention and change.
<ASSESSMENT>Two assignments and one essay, totalling to 5,000 words.
