<OBJECTIVES>By the end of the subject, students should:

<li>understand and be able to identify the ways in which social factors influence language;
<li>have developed an appreciation of the role of language in society;
<li>have become familiar with and be able to apply the central techniques of sociolinguistic research.
</ul>
<CONTENT>How social factors influence language, and the role of language in society.
<ASSESSMENT>Three practical projects and an essay, totalling 5,000 words.
