<OBJECTIVES>By the end of the subject, students should:
<ul>
<li>develop an understanding of the main linguistic approaches to the study of meaning;
<li>develop skills in semantic analysis and argumentation;
<li>demonstrate a more detailed appreciation of the problems of accounting for some selected areas of linguistic meaning;
<li>be able to situate the study of linguistic meaning in context with respect to work on meaning in other disciplines (e. g. philosophy or semiotics).
</ul>
<CONTENT>An introduction to the study of meaning.
<ASSESSMENT>Two written assignments, a tutorial presentation and an essay. There will also be regular non-assessable problems, totalling 5,000 words.
