<OBJECTIVES>Students completing first-year Linguistics subjects should:

<li>have begun to develop skills for describing and analyzing languages;
<li>have gained a conceptual framework for thinking about and discussing language.

<CONTENT>Syntax, semantics, pragmatics, psycholinguistics, and historical linguistics; selected topics in applied linguistics.
<ASSESSMENT>Regular problem-solving exercises and a 2000-word essay, totalling 4,000 words.
