<OBJECTIVES>Students completing this subject should:

<li>have begun to develop skills for describing and analyzing languages;
<li>have gained a conceptual framework for thinking about and discussing language.
<li>have gained a broad familiarity with the history and structure of English.
</ul>
<CONTENT>The origins and history of English, grammar and meaning, pragmatics, sociolinguistics, Australian English, dialects and accents of English, and pidgins and creoles; selected topics in applied linguistics.
<ASSESSMENT>Three problem-solving assignments, a 2000-word essay and a take-home examination paper, totalling 4,000 words.
