<OBJECTIVES>On completion of this subject students should be able to:
<ul>
<li>explain the general legal framework which regulates the rights and duties of parents and children and other family members in Australian society;
<li>discuss moral, social, legal and policy dilemmas that arise from family relationships;
<li>discuss the legal and social issues that arise from family law:
<li>critically evaluate the law;
<li>carry out independent research in regard to the family and the law.
</ul>
<CONTENT>The role and changing nature of family relationships. The formation and termination of marital status. The legal consequences of marriage and divorce. The rights of children and the protection of family members.
<ASSESSMENT>Research work 3,000 words (50%) and a 2-hour final examination (50%).
