<OBJECTIVES>At the conclusion of this subject students will have:
<ul>
<li>achieved familiarity with a range of German prose fiction from the years 1985-1995;
<li>acquired the requisite background knowledge to situate contemporary German prose fiction in its social and historical context
<li>a thorough acquaintance with the specific problems confronting writers in a newly united Germany;
<li>an awareness of the urgency of the task of achieving 'reconciliation' between East and West as reflected in creative writing.
</ul>
<CONTENT>This subject, which will be held in German, sets out to introduce students to the latest in high quality German prose writing. The subject will begin with some shorter works by leading writers of the former GDR published in the years before the opening of the Berlin Wall. It will then consider the first echoes of the unification in fictional writing of the period and concentrate on such topics as the legacy of the Stasi files and the problems they pose for a genuine reconciliation between East and West. The search for fresh directions in writing of the last few years will provide a focus for the final part of the subject.
<ASSESSMENT>Written work of no more than 6,000 words.
