<OBJECTIVES>At the conclusion of the subject, students will have:
<ul>
<li>an understanding of the major political periods of Germany in the 20th century and of their cultural, intellectual and social framework;
<li>studied some significant 20th-century German literary works with particular reference to them as documents of, and statements about, their period;
<li>encountered different interpretative approaches to 20th century German literature.
</ul>
<CONTENT>Major 20th century German literary works in their cultural and political context. No knowledge of German required.
<ASSESSMENT>A 3000-word essay and an additional class paper for second-year students.
