<OBJECTIVES>Students completing this subject should have:
<ul>
<li>a broad knowledge of the differences between myth, fairy tale and popular narratives in film &amp; other media, in relation to Graeco-Roman and Judeo-Christian traditions;
<li>an understanding of residual elements within the media, of magic thinking in the context of the dis-enchanted world view of scientific rationalism
</ul>
<CONTENT>Re-interpretations of the founding Graeco-Roman mythologies in Western Culture will be explored in relation to cinema and other mass media. Topics will include: the Christian myth of sacrifice and redemption; feminist re-readings of Freud, Jung, myths and fairy tales.
<ASSESSMENT>Written work which may comprise class papers, essays, visual tests or take-home examinations totalling about 6,000 words.
