<OBJECTIVES>Students completing this subject should, in addition to the above:
<ul>
<li>be able to address specific art-historical problems in French art 1900-1915 from the perspective of current scholarship and theories of interpretation;
<li>have a good knowledge of major art movements, trends in criticism, and art institutions of the period.
</ul>
<CONTENT>A research seminar investigating the two key figures of the pre-1918 avant-garde in terms of recent scholarship. Issues treated include the academic sources of radical art; the dealer-critic system; Fauvism and the Salon; nationalism, anarchism and art; literary thematics; expression and the body; and significations of cubism and collage.
<ASSESSMENT>Written work which may comprise class papers, essays, visual tests or take-home examinations totalling about 6,000 words.
