<OBJECTIVES>In addition to the above, students completing this subject should:
<ul>
<li>have a broad knowledge of the major visual manifestations of orientalism in European culture, including painting, photography and film;
<li>have a familiarity with current theories concerning orientalism, the colonial process and the representation of other cultures.
</ul>
<CONTENT>The subject studies European constructions of the East (North Africa to India) in painting, photography, travel writing, architecture, and universal exhibitions. Artists studied include Delacroix, G&eacute; r&ocirc; me, Loti, Matisse, Indian and Algerian painters. Critiques of Orientalism, cross-cultural reading (eg Japonisme), and colonial history are considered from a post-colonial perspective.
<ASSESSMENT>Written work which may comprise class papers, essays, visual tests or take-home examinations totalling about 5,000 words.
