<OBJECTIVES>In addition to the above, students completing this subject should:

<li>have a broad understanding of the development of French painting and sculpture from the French revolution to 1900.
<li>be familiar with the changing artistic techniques of the nineteenth century, and have an understanding of how technical developments influenced stylistic change.
<li>have developed a critical understanding of the role of art criticism in shaping the perception of art in the nineteenth century.
</ul>
<CONTENT>The subject will cover French painting, sculpture and critical writing on the visual arts from the French Revolution in 1789 to the Paris Exposition of 1900.
<ASSESSMENT>Written work which may comprise class papers, essays, visual tests or take-home examinations totalling about 5,000 words.
