ADVANCED ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE 1 12.5 first year. All applicants will be required to sit a test to determine their level of language proficiency before they are able to enrol in this subject. Students who are native speakers of English or whose language proficiency is near-native are not eligible to enrol. Either semester 5 contact hours per week. On completion of this subject students should have improved their ability to:
  • understand and recognise the differences between formal and informal styles of English used in academic settings;
  • take selective and salient notes in lectures;
  • speak appropriately in educational contexts;
  • read a range of texts effectively and critically;
  • synthesise and organise material from spoken and written sources;
  • write reports, essays and other assignments fluently, accurately and in a way that addresses the task;
  • understand some major features of contemporary Australian society and their origins;
  • be independent learners.
Extension of academic language skills through a syllabus drawn from themes in Australian history. Continuous assessment in oral and written work; two written assignments of approximately 1,000 words each; a spoken presentation of five minutes' duration; one three-hour exam.
