<PREREQUISITES>3rd year: Any two second year criminology subjects; 4th year: Admission to Criminology Honours.
<SEMESTER>First semester
<CONTACT>One 1-hour lecture and a 2-hour seminar per week.
<OBJECTIVES>Students who complete this subject should be able to:
<ul>
<li>understand the history of victim movements and victimology;
<li>comprehend general patterns of criminal victimisation;
<li>appreciate the main needs of victims of crime;
<li>be able to locate media and other debate about victims in broader economic, political and other social contexts.
</ul>
<CONTENT>History of victimology and victim movements; definitions, perspectives and patterns of victimisation; victims of crime versus victims of the abuse of power; researching victims' needs; victims of crime and the legal process; victim organisations and programs in Australia; victims and the legal process; feminist perspectives; the politics of victimisation.
<ASSESSMENT>Up to 5,000 words of written work at 3rd year level and 6,000 words at 4th year level. An examination may be substituted for part of the written work.
