<PREREQUISITES>3rd year: Any two second year level Criminology subjects; 4th year: Admission to Criminology Honours.
<SEMESTER>First semester
<CONTACT>A 1-hour class and a 2-hour seminar.
<OBJECTIVES>Students completing this subject should have:
<ul>
<li>a broad understanding of crime problems facing Australia and other Western countries, and of the need for crime prevention;
<li>an appreciation of the philosophies and techniques of situational, social and developmental crime prevention;
<li>a critical perspective on crime prevention programs and philosophies in Australia and selected other Western countries;
<li>a broad capacity to apply crime prevention philosophies and techniques in specific contexts, and to review the effectiveness of programs;
<li>an understanding of social and political factors which can affect the development an application of crime prevention policy.
</ul>
<CONTENT>Analyses of techniques for social and environmental prevention; issues in program development, implementation and evaluation.
<ASSESSMENT>Up to 5,000 words of written work at 3rd year level and 6,000 words at 4th year level, including contribution to a team fieldwork exercise. An examination may be substituted for part of the written work.
